Australia has announced Two-Year extension of post-study work rights on Visa Subclass 485

In an important update, Australian Government has extended the post-study work rights to give eligible foreign higher education graduates with selected qualifications an additional 2 years on their Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485). The part-time working hour limit has also been increased for the International students in Australia. Find out more about the latest updates.

Post-study work rights extension

The international students in Australia will get Post-study work rights extension up to 2 additional years. Here are key points related to the same.

  • From 1 July 2023, Foreign higher education graduates in Australia with eligible qualifications will get additional 2 years of post-study work rights. 
  • Post-study work rights for selected degrees in areas of verified skills shortages will be increased from: 
  • Two years to four years for select Bachelor’s degrees.
  • Three years to five years for select Master’s degrees.
  • Four years to six years for all Doctoral qualifications (PhDs) 
  • To make this extension applicable, lists of occupations in demand and related qualifications were developed via a mapping process accepted by Jobs and Skills Australia and the Department of Education, Australia. 
  • A complete list mapped to CRICOS course codes will be released by the Department of Education before enactment on 1 July 2023. The students will need to refer to the complete list, when released, to confirm the eligibility of their particular course at their provider. 
  • The extension adds to the existing additional 1 to 2 years of work rights for eligible foreign students who study, live and work in regional parts of Australia

Part -time working hour limit increased

The DHA has also announced an increase to the part -time working hour limit for the foreign students in Australia, from 40 hours per fortnight to 48 hours per fortnight, from 1 July 2023.

Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485)- Second Post-Study Work stream

This particular visa is for holders of a Temporary Graduate visa (first Post-Study Work stream or Replacement stream) who graduated with an Australian degree from an educational institution located in a regional area.

It allows you to live, work and study in Australia, temporarily for 1 to 2 years depending on the regional area you and your institution is located.
