Major Update: Canada Announces New Express Entry Categories for 2026

Canada has introduced important updates to its Express Entry system for 2026, bringing new opportunities for skilled professionals looking to obtain permanent residence.

On February 18, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced new priority categories under the Express Entry system. The announcement was made by Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab, outlining Canada’s focus on attracting highly skilled workers to meet urgent labour shortages and support economic growth.

If you are planning to apply for Canada PR in 2026, this update could significantly improve your chances.

What Are the New Express Entry Categories in 2026?

Under the category-based selection system, Canada will now prioritize candidates in the following occupations:

1. Foreign Medical Doctors

Doctors with Canadian work experience will receive targeted Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence.

2. Researchers & Senior Managers

Highly skilled professionals in research roles and senior executive positions with Canadian experience will now be prioritized.

3. Transport & Aviation Occupations

Pilots, aircraft mechanics, and aviation inspectors are included to strengthen Canada’s transport and infrastructure sectors.

4. Highly Skilled Military Personnel

Certain military professionals, including doctors, nurses, and pilots recruited by Canadian Armed Forces, are now part of category-based selectionExisting Express Entry Categories Will Continue

In addition to the new occupations, IRCC will continue to conduct category-based draws for:

  • French-language proficiency candidates

  • Healthcare and social services occupations

  • Skilled trades

Why This Update Is Important for PR Applicants

These changes show that Canada is becoming more targeted and strategic with immigration selection. Instead of relying only on CRS scores, the government is focusing on occupations that are in high demand.

This means:

  • Some candidates may receive ITAs even with moderate CRS scores

  • Professionals in priority sectors could see faster selection

  • Canadian work experience is becoming even more valuable

If your profile matches any of the new categories, this is a strong opportunity to strengthen your Express Entry application.

What Should You Do Now?

If you are considering applying for Canada PR in 2026:

  • Review your NOC code carefully

  • Update your Express Entry profile

  • Ensure your work experience documentation is accurate

  • Check if you qualify under category-based selection

Every update in Express Entry can impact your eligibility and strategy. Getting proper guidance at this stage can make a major difference.
