UK Skilled Worker Visa

The Skilled Worker visa offers an opportunity for proficient professionals to progress their careers in the UK. The permissible duration of stay under the U.K. Skilled Worker category is a maximum of 5 years. This points-based visa compels applicants to achieve a minimum of 70 points for their application to be evaluated. Points are allocated based on factors such as

  • possession of a Certificate of Sponsorship from an employer,
  • receipt of an adequate salary,
  • proficiency in English communication, and
  • the availability of maintenance funds.

Meeting these UK work visa requirements qualifies you to apply for the Skilled Worker Visa.

The Tier 2 visa is categorized to accommodate various professionals, including:

  • Tier 2 General Visa: Applicable to people with a employment offer in the UK and whose occupation is listed on the shortage occupation list. This category has been succeeded by the Skilled Worker visa.
  • Tier 2 Intra-Company Transfer Visa: Designed for employees of corporations relocating to the UK.
  • Tier 2 Minister of Religion Visa: Intended for religious ministers within a religious organization.
  • Tier 2 Sportsperson Visa: Tailored for coaches and sports professionals.

Upon successfully obtaining a Skilled Worker visa, you gain the ability to:

  • Pursue studies in the UK.
  • Bring family members to reside in the UK.
  • Travel to and from the UK as needed.

Processing Timeline

Application for this visa can be started 3 months prior to your anticipated start of work in the UK, with the specific starting date outlined in the certificate of sponsorship issued by your UK employer. The decision on your visa application is typically communicated within 3 weeks of submission. Particularly, as the UK government incorporates extra occupations into the Shortage Occupation List, the UK Work visa processing time is anticipated to decrease for numerous applicants.

Duration of Stay under the Skilled Worker Visa A maximum stay of 5 years is permissible on this visa, aligning with the duration specified in your job contract. Should you not surpass the maximum duration stipulated for your visa type, extending your stay is possible. To do the same, you need to apply for an extension, either through the online platform or at a premium service centre for UK visas. On the Tier 2 visa, or the duration indicated on your certificate of sponsorship (plus 1 month), you can stay for a maximum of 5 years and 14 days, choosing the shorter duration.

Application fees

In case you are applying from outside the UK, the standard UK work visa fees depends on whether you will be in the UK for:

  • up to 3 years - £719 per person

  • more than 3 years - £1,420 per person

You and your family can pay a lower application fee provided your job is on the shortage occupation list.

Other Charges

When submitting an application for a Skilled Worker visa, it is essential to ensure that you have adequate funds to cover the following:

  • Application fee: The standard fee varies from £719 to £1,500, depending on your specific circumstances.
  • Healthcare surcharge: Typically set at £624 per year.
  • Initial financial support upon your arrival in the UK: Generally, you should have at least £1,270 available, unless exempt.

The above mentioned charges includes in the overall UK work visa cost.

Requirements to Apply for UK Tier-2 Visa

The documentation needed for the UK Tier 2 Visa includes:

  • A valid Certificate of Sponsorship from an employer
  • Salary and financial details
  • Present passport and travel history
  • Certifications proving your English proficiency level
  • Police verification certificate or PCC
  • Other supporting documents

Skilled Worker-Dependent Visa

The Skilled Worker dependent visa is designed for the children and partners of people who have either arrived in the nation on a Skilled Worker visa or have submitted an application for one. The Skilled Worker dependent visa is applicable to the following individuals:

  • Spouse
  • Unmarried or same-sex partner
  • Children below the age of 18 at the time of application
  • Children over the age of 18 who are dependent

For spouses and partners, the relationship should be genuine, and they should wish to reside together throughout their stay in the country.

Financial Requirements: Skilled Worker dependents are not eligible for public funds. Therefore, they must show enough financial means for their stay in the UK. Additionally, if there are dependents, an extra £630 must be shown for each dependent.

Age: Both the principal applicant and dependent needs to be minimum 18 on the date of arrival in the United Kingdom or when the visa is issued.

Other Conditions: You must not have held a UK visa for students, a short-term study visa, or been granted leave as a parent of a Tier 4 student (child) on or after April 2015. Furthermore, you must meet the general grounds for admission, maintaining a clear immigration history without any instances of stay too long. There should be no intention to stay in the UK once your spouse or relative's visa expires.

Application Procedure

  • Skilled Worker dependent visa applications can be submitted either concurrently with the primary Skilled Worker visa application or at a later stage.
  • Regardless of the timing of submissions, successful applicants will be granted leave corresponding to the duration of leave accorded to the principal visa applicant.
  • The approval process may vary depending on the jurisdiction where approval for a Tier 2-based visa is sought.

As a holder of Skilled Worker dependent visas, you are entitled to:

  • Live in the UK for the same duration as the primary Skilled Worker visa holder.
  • Engage in employment, with limited exceptions.
  • Pursue studies or undertake a postgraduate course, subject to specific conditions.
  • Apply for visa extensions in alignment with the principal applicant, provided you continue to meet the eligibility criteria. Extension applications are not permissible once the key visa holder has departed the UK.

Limitations include the inability to access public funds, work as a trainee doctor, dentist, or professional sports instructor. Tier 2 visa applications undergo evaluation based on the UK's point-based system. A minimum of 70 points is required for qualification.

Thirty points can be earned with an employment offer and an employer sponsorship certificate, and an additional 30 points if the occupation is listed in the Skills Shortage list. With a total of 60 points, acquirng the remaining points for qualification becomes relatively straightforward.

Locating a UK employer capable of sponsoring a Tier 2 visa

It will be open to identify one within the publicly accessible 'Register of Sponsors Licensed Under the Points-based System.' This registry includes a comprehensive list of employers authorized to sponsor international employees.
