Canada Extends Duration of Interim Work Authorization for International Graduates

Canada has recently extended the validity period of interim work authorization letters granted to international graduates awaiting a decision on their work permit application.

Updated Work Authorization Duration

The interim work authorization letters will now remain valid for 180 days from the application submission date, up from the previous 120 days.

Understanding Interim Work Authorization

Interim work authorization letters, issued by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), signify that international graduates can commence employment while awaiting the final decision on their work permit application.

Eligibility Criteria for Interim Work Authorization

International graduates seeking to work before applying for their Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) must fulfil specific requirements:

  • Hold a valid study permit upon submitting the work permit application.
  • Successfully complete their study program.
  • Satisfy conditions for working off-campus without a work permit, including enrolment at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), completing a program of at least 8 months, receiving a degree, diploma, or certificate, and adhering to permissible work hours.

Continued Work Authorization and Reapplication

Recipients of interim work authorization can continue working in Canada, including after temporary departures (subject to necessary travel documents). Should 180 days elapse without a decision, applicants may request further proof of authorization through the IRCC webform.
