Canada Calling Tech Workers Amidst Growing Demand

As per the recent update by the Council of Canadian Innovators, there is a shortage of qualified workers in Canada, which led to CCI's recommendation to introduce a new High Potential Tech Visa.

With new recommendations, several permanent residency and work permit options and growing demand from the tech sector, this is the right time for foreign tech workers to immigrate to Canada.

As mentioned, realizing the importance of the tech talent in different sectors to support the Canadian economy, both federal and provincial governments several options to tech professionals willing to settle and work in Canada.

Here are a few popular Canadian immigration options for Tech Professionals:

Express Entry

It is one of the popular and fastest Canadian permanent residency pathways for skilled foreign workers. It is an online PR application management system. As a tech worker, you may qualify to come to Canada under two EE programs-

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Provincial Nominee Programs

Canadian provinces also offer immigration pathways to Tech Workers. Most of the provinces and territories (apart from Nunavut) have their Provincial Nominee Programs, via which you can apply for nomination via Express Entry aligned PNP streams.

Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) Accelerated Tech Pathway

Launched in January 2022, AAIP Accelerated Tech Pathway provides an expedited provincial nomination option to Express Entry candidates.

To qualify, candidates must meet the eligibility criteria for Alberta's Express Entry Stream. In addition, they must be either working in Alberta currently or have a valid job offer in 23 eligible occupations, including graphic designers and illustrators, user support technicians, mechanical engineers, etc.

British Columbia Tech Stream

The British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program provides a priority pathway to eligible tech workers under the BC Tech stream. Under tech pilot, BC PNP targets those candidates who have a valid job offer in any one of the 29 tech occupations.

Saskatchewan Tech Talent Stream

The Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) has launched its new tech pathway for tech professionals,

To qualify, you must have an employer-specific Job Approval Letter for a technology sector occupation in Saskatchewan.

Ontario Tech Draws

Ontario opened OINP Tech Draws for skilled tech workers under the Human Capital Priorities (HCP) stream.

To qualify, candidates must be eligible for either the Federal Skilled Worker Program or the Canadian Experience Class and have work experience in any one of the following tech occupations:

  • software engineers and designers
  • computer engineers
  • computer programmers and interactive media developers
  • web designers and developers
  • computer and information systems managers
  • database analysts and data administrators
