Canadian Government to grant citizenship to 300,000 people in 2022-23

Government of Canada is planning to grant citizenship to 300,000 people in the fiscal year 2022-2023. The IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) memo endorses to process a total of 285,000 decisions and 300,000 new citizens by March 31, 2023.

A decision implies a review of an application, which is then approved, rejected, or marked as incomplete.

The IRCC has already announced to welcome 431,645 permanent residents this year. This newly recommended target for citizenship indicates a healthy ratio when it comes to yearly grant of PR visas vs citizenship granted by government of Canada in a year.

300,000 people to get Canadian Citizenship in 2022-23

The aim or target for Canadian citizenship indicates that 300,000 approved applicants need to take the oath of citizenship, i.e. either in person or virtually. Here are key points to notice about this latest recommendation by IRCC:

  • As per IRCC, minors (under 18 years) will be eligible to apply for citizenship online by the end of the year.
  • This is a substantial surge in citizenship grants over the 2021-2022 fiscal year and it even surpasses the pre-pandemic targets of 2019-2020, when IRCC processed 253,000 citizenship applications
  • In the 2022-2023, until now, Canada has welcomed 116,000 new citizens and it is on its way to achieve its target.
  • Over the same period in 2021, the Canada only sworn in 35,000 people.

Roadblocks removed in application processing

In March 2020, IRCC could not process most applications in view of the global pandemic, as it was only able to process paper applications mailed to a central location. IRCC was unable to hold interviews with applicants and there could not be any oath swearing at citizenship ceremonies. However, since Canada has already removed all Covid-19 restrictions, therefore the things are back on track once again.

Indians are expected to benefit from this decision

Although, the IRCC has not provided any country wise break-up of the statistics, however, still, Indians are likely to benefit from this decision, as they are the top immigrant group to take up permanent residency in Canada in 2022.

India is the leading source country, when it comes to Canada immigration, accounting for almost one-third of overall landings in the year 2021. It is also the primary source of international students to Canada, and a significant number of these students ultimately gain permanent residence via CEC category of Federal Express Entry System.
