Canada to exempt Certain Visa Applicants from Medical Examination temporarily

Canada is the top choice for immigrants looking to live, work or study abroad. Every year a huge number of aspirants apply for Canada PR visa from all parts of the world. This is the reason that Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues to set the bar higher for visa and immigration processing.

As part of this obligation, IRCC is implementing a temporary public policy, which will help reorganize processing for low-risk immigration applicants. The new medical examination policy targets to provide improved client service experience as well as faster visa application processing, while efficiently handling public health risks.

Few Visa Applicants will be example from medical examination

The IRCC has employed a temporary public policy, which exempts a few low-risk, in- overseas nationals and in Canada applicants, from submitting an immigration medical examination (IME) as part of their application when their earlier IME has expired. It will help quicker application processing to help eligible overseas applicants rapidly acquire temporary or permanent resident status.

Who will be exempt from medical examination?

This exemption applies to overseas applicants who have,

  • a new or pending application for permanent or temporary residence or a PR visa, made from within Canada
  • completed an immigration medical exam within the last five years and sat no risk to public health or safety, or reported to public health authorities for monitoring, as required

Key points to remember about this temporary policy

Find below a few key points to note about this new policy applied by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC):

  • While submitting an application, candidates need to provide the unique medical identifier number from their earlier medical exam.
  • This new temporary public policy will remain in effect until October 6, 2024.
  • The Candidates, not eligible under this temporary public policy are required to undergo an IME as per normal health screening procedures. IRCC will interact with the individuals, not eligible for the exemption to discuss upcoming steps.
  • IRCC applied two similar temporary public policies between May 2021 and March 2022 that eradicated the requirement for a second IME. The measures streamlined the application process resulting in cost savings and accelerated processing.
  • The earlier two temporary public policies profited roughly 85,000 low-risk applicants, and this latest public policy expected to benefit over 180,000 extra clients.
