Employment in Canada increased with a drop in active labour force

As per the latest, report from Labour Force Survey (LFS)-September 2022, released on September 7, 2022, employment marginally changed (+21,000) in September, with both part time and full-time work stand steady. Unemployment rate in Canada reduced by 0.2 points to be at 5.2 percent in September 2022. Find out more.

Labour Force Survey-September 2022

Here are the main highlights of the LFS released by Statistics Canada for September 2022:

  • Employment raised in 4 provinces, highest being in British Columbia. There were lesser individuals working in the provinces, i.e. Ontario and Prince Edward Island.
  • After growing by 0.5 percentage points to 5.4% in the month of August 2022, the unemployment rate reduced to 5.2% in September. The adjusted unemployment rate—, comprising people who wanted to work, however, did not look for job—was little changed.
  • After decreasing constantly for two months, the number of employees in the public sector increased by 35,000 (+0.8%) in September.
  • The supply of labour has been a predominantly key feature of the labour market in the last year, in the perspective of record-high job vacancies earlier in 2022, as well as the longer-term issue of aging population.

While high job vacancies continued until July, both the total size of the labour force—or the number of people who are        employed/unemployed—as well as the participation rate have trended downwards since May.

Canadian federal and provincial government as constantly easing the immigration process and requirements to invite skilled and talented professionals from overseas.

In last few months, federal Express Entry System and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) have invited record high number of candidates in their periodic invitation rounds.
