IRCC Updates Canada Immigration Processing Times – As of 20th May 2025

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has released its latest update on processing times for various immigration services, effective May 20, 2025. These updated timelines offer crucial insights for individuals applying for temporary visas, permanent residency, citizenship, and passports in Canada.

Since 2022, IRCC has utilized an advanced system to provide more precise processing estimates, replacing previous, less accurate standards. With a continued rise in global demand and application volumes, these figures serve as a vital planning tool for prospective immigrants and those adjusting their status in Canada.

It is important to note that these times are estimates based on 80% of recently processed applications and can vary depending on individual case complexities.

Key Processing Time Updates (May 20, 2025)

Citizenship Applications:

IRCC has adjusted processing times for citizenship applications.

  • Grant: 10 months
  • Certificate: 4 months
  • Renunciation: 7 months
  • Search of Records: 15 months (unchanged)
  • Resumption: Insufficient data for an estimate

Permanent Resident (PR) Card Processing:

Slight increases are observed in PR card processing times, reflecting higher demand.

  • New PR Card: 47 days
  • PR Card Renewal: 12 days

Family Sponsorship

Family sponsorship timelines show variations by region and application type, with Quebec often experiencing longer waits due to additional provincial requirements.

  • Spouse, common-law or conjugal partner (outside Canada, outside Quebec): 10 months
  • Spouse or common-law partner (in Canada, outside Quebec): 29 months
  • Spouse, common-law or conjugal partner (outside Canada, in Quebec): 36 months
  • Spouse or common-law partner (inside Canada, in Quebec): 36 months
  • Parents or grandparents (outside Quebec): 36 months
  • Parents or grandparents (in Quebec): 48 months

Canadian Passport Processing

Passport processing times remain largely consistent, with expedited options available.

  • New Passport (In-Person): 10 business days (no change)
  • New Passport Applications (mailed from abroad): 20 business days
  • Urgent Pick-Up: By the end of the next business day
  • Express Pick-Up: 2–9 business days
  • Regular Passport (Mailed from Outside Canada): 20 business days (no change)

Economic Class PR Applications

Economic class programs, such as Express Entry, cater to skilled workers and entrepreneurs.

  • Atlantic Immigration Program: 11 months
  • Canadian Experience Class (Online via Express Entry): 5 months
  • Provincial Nominees (Online via Express Entry): 5 months
  • Provincial Nominees (non-Express Entry): 20 months
  • Skilled Workers (Federal - Online via Express Entry): 5 months
  • Skilled Trades (Federal - Online via Express Entry): Not enough data
  • Self-Employed Persons (Federal): 53 months

    • India: 10 weeks
