Employment increased in Canada by 150,000 in January– LFS Report- January 2023

As per Canada Labour Force Survey (LFS), report -January 2023, employment increased in the maple leaf country by 150,000 (+0.8%) in January 2023 mostly in full-time work, while the unemployment rate held stable at low mark, i.e. 5.0%. In last few months, employment rate of Canada is rising continuously, while opening new prospects and opportunities for the locals and newcomers in the maple leaf country. 

Employment constantly showing upward trend

Since September 2022, total employment in Canada is continuously showing an upward trend with collective gains totalling 326,000 (+1.7%). Here are a few key statistics released by Labour Force Survey (LFS) for January 2023:

  • Employment gains stimulated primarily by people aged 25 to 54(+100,000; +0.8%)
  • The largest employment rises were in Ontario (+63,000; +0.8%), Quebec (+47,000; +1.1%) and Alberta (+21,000; +0.9%).
  • There were large employment rises in both Canada and the United States in January.
  • The number of employees grew in both the private and public sectors
  • There were gains across several industries, led by wholesale and retail trade, health care and social assistance and educational services.
  • Employment among those not born in Canada and have never been a landed immigrant was spread across a number of industries in January 2023, comprising professional, scientific and technical services, retail trade, accommodation and food services, and health care and social assistance
  • Among women aged 25 to 54, employment rose by 51,000 (+0.8%) in January
  • The unemployment rate held stable at 5.0% in January, inches away from the record-low 4.9% witnessed in June and July 2022.

Employment rose in 5 provinces in January

In January 2023, Employment raised in key provinces of Canada, i.e. Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan, while it dropped slightly in Newfoundland and Labrador.

As far as key industries are concerned, the rise in employment in January was extensive across various industries, i.e. wholesale and retail trade, the number of individuals working grew by 59,000 (+2.0%), i.e. the first notable upsurge since February 2022. The health care and social assistance industry observed employment gains of 40,000 (+1.5%) in January. The number of individuals working in educational services increased by 18,000. The number of individuals working in educational services rose by 18,000, while Employment in construction upraised by 16,000.
