Canadian immigration minister highlighted importance of French on International Francophonie Day

Canada celebrated International Francophonie Day on 20 March 2023. Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) in his statement on this day, highlighted the importance of French language and it’s role in Canadian immigration. French is the official language of Canada along with English. Hence, proficiency in any or both of these languages benefits the applicants of Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) Visa.

International Francophonie Day Celebration in Canada

In his statement on this day, Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said,

“Today we are celebrating International Francophonie Day. This day is an opportunity to highlight the importance of the French language and official languages as parts of the Canadian fabric. Celebrating the Francophonie is an opportunity for all Canadians to support the global Francophone community and express their pride in promoting the French language, while contributing to the linguistic duality that characterizes our country.

The minister further added, “This year is an important year for the Francophonie in Canada. Recently, in 2022, we reached our objective in Francophone immigration. Achieving this target of 4.4% French-speaking immigrants outside Quebec is an incredible accomplishment since we welcomed in 2022 more Francophone newcomers than in recent years. This achievement is an important step in the promotion of the Francophonie in Canada, but we know there is still a lot of work to do to ensure its future in our country.
