IRCC conducts first ever Category-based Draw for STEM category Candidates

The IRCC opened second Express Entry draw in just two days, which was EE draw no.254 since launch. This new invitation round of EE system took place 5 July 2023 for the candidates with experience in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) occupations. This draw for STEM experts was announced by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) last week.

Category-based draw for STEM candidates on 5 July

In this category-based draw, the IRCC issued total 500 ITAs (Invitations to Apply) for Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) Visa to STEM experts. The CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score requirement was 486 points. Now, the IRCC has invited total 60,748 candidates this year in overall 18 EE draws opened in the year 2023 until date.

EE Draw Analysis

This was first ever draw dedicated to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) category candidates, i.e. the ones with experience in STEM occupations. The STEM category NOC occupations eligible for this draw are as follows:

  • Architects
  • Architecture and science managers
  • Business systems specialists
  • Civil Engineers
  • Computer and information systems managers
  • Computer engineers (except software engineers and designers)
  • Computer systems developers and programmers
  • Cybersecurity specialists
  • Data scientists
  • Database analysts and data administrators
  • Electrical and electronics engineers
  • Engineering managers
  • Industrial and manufacturing engineers
  • Information systems specialists
  • Land surveyors
  • Landscape Architects
  • Mathematicians, statisticians, and actuaries
  • Metallurgical and materials engineers
  • Natural and applied science policy researchers, consultants, and program officers
  • Software developers and programmers
  • Software engineers and designers
  • Urban and land use planners
  • Web designers
  • Web developers and programmers

Category-based draws

Now, the IRCC is holding the category-based draws. This was the second category-based draw of EE system. Here are 6 new categories for which applicants may be eligible in category-based Express Entry draws:

  • Healthcare
  • Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
  • Trades, such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
  • Transport
  • Agriculture and agri-food
  • Strong French-language proficiency
