Immigrants accounts for largest share of the Canadian population in over 150 years

The history of immigration to Canada goes back to more than a century. Millions of people world over chosen Canada as their new home in last few decades. As per Statistics Canada report, in 2021, over 8.3 million people, (i.e. almost 23.0%) of the population, were, or had ever been, a landed immigrant or PR (permanent resident) in Canada.

It was the biggest percentage since Confederation, surpassing the earlier 1921 record of 22.3%, and the highest among the G7.

Immigrants has highest proportion of the population

As per Statistics Canada, approximately one in four people in Canada are immigrants, which is the utmost proportion of the population in more than 150 years.

Here are few key highlights of the sixth set of results from the 2021 Census released by Statistics Canada:

  • Nearly one in 4 people (23.0%) counted during the 2021 Census are or have been a landed immigrant or PR in Canada.
  • More than 1.3 million new newcomers settled permanently in Canada from 2016 to 2021, i.e. the highest number of fresh immigrants recorded in a Canadian census.
  • The share of new immigrants settling in Atlantic Canada nearly tripled in fifteen years, increased from 1.2% in 2006 to 3.5% in 2021.
  • More than half of new comers living in Canada got admission under the economic category. Out of total 748,120 economic immigrants, just more than one-third (5%) selected through skilled worker programs and extra one-third (33.6%) via the PNPs.
  • The part of immigrants who first came to Canada momentarily on work or study permits or as asylum claimants before being admitted as PRs was particularly high among fresh immigrants who settled since 2016 (36.6%).
  • Asia, comprising the Middle East, persisted the continent of birth for most new immigrants (62.0%).
  • Nearly one in 5 recent immigrants (18.6%) were born in India, making it the principal country of birth for new immigration to Canada.
  • On the contrary, the share of new immigrants from Europe continued to drop, falling from 61.6% in 1971 to 10.1% in 2021.
  • The huge majority (92.7%) of new immigrants are able to do a conversation in English/French.
  • The part of second-generation Canadians (children of immigrants) less than 15 years with minimum one foreign-born parent rose from 26.7% in 2011 to 31.5% in 2021. 

Canada is undoubtedly the most lenient country, when it comes to accepting new immigrants. It every year welcomes over 400,000 new permanent residents and as per its multiyear immigration level plan for next three years, the IRCC will accept more than one million immigrants on Permanent Resident (PR) Visa.
