Employment in Canada rose by 104,000 -Labour Force Survey, December 2022

As per the latest Labour Force Survey (LFS) report, employment in Canada rose by 104,000 (+0.5%) in the last month of the year 2022, i.e. December. On the other hand, the unemployment rate declined 0.1 percentage points to 5.0%, i.e. slightly more than the record low of 4.9% registered in the months of June and July. Employment increased significantly in Canada

Find out the key factors revealed by the LFS report with regard to employment in the maple leaf country:

  • Rise among youth- The growth in the Employment in Canada was led by rise among youth (i.e. aged 15 to 24), which regained collective losses witnessed for this group from July to September.
  • Gain in key sectors: The number of workers rose in the private sector, while it remained stable in the public sector. There were comprehensive employment gains across many industries, such as, construction, transportation and warehousing, etc.
  • States that recorded gains: Employment rose in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Saskatchewan in December. There was little change in the other provinces.
  • Year-over-year growth- When we talk about average hourly wages of employees, year-over-year growth remained over 5% continuously in 7th month in December, i.e. up 5.1% (+$1.57 to $32.06) compare to December 2021 (not seasonally adjusted).

Employment Rose in various industries

  • The number of people working in construction rose by 35,000 (+2.3%) in December, mainly in four provinces, led by Ontario and Alberta
  • In transportation and warehousing, employment rose by 29,000 (+3.0%) in December,
  • Employment in information, culture and recreation was up by 25,000 (+3.1%) in December,
  • The number of people working in professional, scientific and technical services rose by 23,000 (+1.3%) in December, with gains mostly in Ontario (+22,000; +2.8%).
  • There were also more people working in accommodation and food services public administration, and "other services" in December.
