Category-Based Draws Overview

One notable trend in 2023 was the occurrence of category-based draws, with a total of 17 draws inviting significant 25,873 candidates. This offers a unique and beneficial opportunity for applicants, especially considering that Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores tend to be lower in category-based draws.

Categories Chosen for Category-Based Draws in 2023

The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) chose specific categories for category-based selections in 2023, stressing upon the importance of skilled professionals in various sectors. The categories included:

• Healthcare
• Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
• Trades, such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
• Transport
• Agriculture and agri-food
• Strong French proficiency

For the year 2024, some of the high demand categories are likely to sustain, i.e. STEM and Healthcare occupations, and French proficiency, etc. offering greater Canada immigration opportunity for the aspirants in these sectors.

Draw Types and Frequency

Out of the 42 Express Entry draws held in the year 2023, the majority (19 draws) were all-program draws, considering candidates from the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class. Surprisingly, no Invitations to Apply (ITAs) were issued to Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) candidates throughout the year.

Distribution of Draws

Of the 42 draws, 5 were Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)-only draws, 1 was Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)-only, and the rest 17 were category-based selection draws.

CRS Scores Overview

The lowest CRS score in 2023 was 354 points, recorded in the 28 September 2023 category-based draw opened for Agriculture and agri-food occupations. On the other end, the highest CRS score reached 561 on December 6, when 4,750 all-program candidates received ITAs.

All-Program Draw Statistics

For all-program draws, the lowest CRS score was 481 on March 29, enabling the issuance of ITAs to 7,000 candidates.

Monthly Highlights

March emerged as the biggest month, with a total of 21,667 candidates receiving ITAs (Invitations to Apply) for Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) Visa. Month of December witnessed the highest number of draws in 2023, with a total of 7 Express Entry draws opening up opportunities for applicants.
