Canada conducts first-ever category-based Express Entry draw-Invites 500 Healthcare Workers

The IRCC has finally conducted the first-ever category-based Express Entry draw on 28 June 2023. In this special draw, the IRCC has invited 500 Healthcare Workers. The category-based selections were the talk of the town since Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) first announced the same on May 30, 2023 and revealed six different categories. Let’s find out the draw results of this latest and special invitation round of federal Express Entry System.

Category-based EE draw on 28 June 2023

In this special EE draw, the IRCC has invited 500 Healthcare Workers with a CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score of 476 points or above. Now, the EE system has issued total 59,548 invitations this year in 16 EE draws opened until date.

The demand for Healthcare workers in Canada has increased tremendously after the global pandemic. The Health occupations are facing the most severe labour market shortages of any field in Canada. In the first category-based selection round, IRCC has issued 500 ITAs (Invitations to Apply). The 2nd round, inviting 1,500 workers to apply, will occur on July 5, 2023.

IRCC has started Category-based selection

The IRCC has finally started the much talked about Category-based selection. In this draw, the IRCC has targeted the healthcare workers, which is the largest among the six different categories announced for the year 2023. The Healthcare category contains most, i.e. 35 occupations:

  • Audiologists and speech language pathologists
  • Chiropractors
  • Dentists
  • Dieticians and nutritionists
  • Education counsellors
  • General practitioners and family physicians
  • Instructors of persons with disabilities
  • Kinesiologists and other professional occupation in therapy and assessment
  • Licensed practical nurses
  • Massage therapists
  • Medical laboratory assistants and related technical occupations
  • Medical laboratory technologists
  • Medical radiation technologists
  • Medical sonographers
  • Nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Nursing coordinators and supervisors
  • Occupational therapists
  • Optometrists
  • Other assisting occupations in support of health services
  • Other practitioners of natural healing
  • Other professional occupations in health diagnosing and treating
  • Other technical occupations in therapy and assessment
  • Paramedical occupations
  • Pharmacy technical assistants and pharmacy assistants
  • Physician assistants, midwives and allied health professionals
  • Physiotherapists
  • Psychologists
  • Registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses
  • Respiratory therapists, clinical perfusionists and cardiopulmonary technologists
  • Specialists in clinical and laboratory medicine
  • Specialists in surgery
  • Therapists in counselling and related specialized therapies
  • Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners and acupuncturists
  • Veterinarians

Categories chosen for 2023

In 2023, IRCC will target below categories in the category-based Express Entry draws:

  • A strong French language proficiency or
  • Work experience in the below fields:
    • healthcare
    • science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
    • trades, such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors
    • transport
    • agriculture and Agri-food
