Paying attention to the ongoing campaign from the international students for two year work visa, the UK government finally announced a new two-year post-study work visa for international students in the country. As per the home office, the new graduate route that allows the foreign students to work for two years in UK, after completing their studies, would be applicable for 2020-21 academic year. However, several students who are going to start their courses or presently enrolled, are upset as it will not apply to them.
Earlier, the 2 year post-study work visa was scrapped by former Home Secretary Theresa May in the year 2012. Hence, after that, following an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, foreign students were given only 4 months to search for work.
Now the re-introducing this visa will allow all international students (with valid UK immigration status as a student in UK), who have successfully completed a course of study in an approved higher education institution in UK in any subject at the undergraduate level or above to work or search for work in any career or at any position for 2 years post completion of studies.
In a recent statement, Home Secretary Priti Patel expressed positive opinion mentioning that the new Graduate Route will make certain that the talented foreign students, i.e. from science and maths or technology and engineering streams, can study in the United Kingdom and subsequently, earn valuable work experience to further shape a successful career.
Speaking about the new initiative, Dominic Asquith- the British High Commissioner to India said, "This is fantastic news for Indian students, who will now be able to spend more time in the UK after completing their degree, allowing them to gain further skills and experience,"
As per the British High Commission, there are approximately 22,000 Indian students in the United Kingdom, i.e. 100 percent rise from 3 years. Though, the number noticed a sudden fall, post the announcement from Theresa May in 2011-12.
As per the high commission, out of the total number of Indians who apply for visa in UK, 96 Percent remain successful, which means major chunk of UK visa aspirants, who wish to come to the UK, are able to do so in the end,"
