The US Recorded Over 12 per cent Increase in the Number of Indian Students in 2021

As per the annual report released by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on April 6, 2022, the overall number of Indian students in the USA increased by more than 12 per cent in 2021. At the same time, there was a significant drop of over eight per cent in the number of students from China.

The total number of Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVIS) records for active F-1 and M-1 students was 1,236,748 in 2021. F-1 and M-1 are USA's two non-immigrant student visa categories. While, J-1 is a non-immigrant student visa, mostly issued to scholars exchange programs.

In 2021, California welcomed 208,257 international students, which is the most significant number of international students, i.e., 16.8 per cent of any state in the US.

“The number of students from China and India made Asia the most popular continent of origin. However, China sent fewer students in 2021 in comparison to 2020 (-33,569) while India sent more students (+25,391).”

“Students from China and India accounting for 71.9 per cent of the international student population in the USA.”

About the US F1 and M1 Student Visa Categories

Any foreign national who wishes to pursue a study program in the United States must get a student visa (nonimmigrant) for a temporary stay.

There are two types of US Student Visa categories, and you can choose whether you require an F visa or an M visa based on your course of study and the school type.

You need to apply for F Student Visa category if you plan to attend:

  • University or College
  • High School
  • Private Elementary School
  • Seminary
  • Conservatory
  • Another academic institution, including a language training program

You need to apply for M Student Visa category if you plan to attend:

  • Vocational or other recognized nonacademic institution, other than a language training program
