The IRCC begins sending Invitations for 2020 Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has started sending the ITAs (Invitations to Apply) for the 2020 Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) w.e.f. January 5, 2021. If you have submitted the Interest to Sponsor during the last year PGP window, i.e. between October 13 and November 3, 2020, you must check your e-mail regularly this week, as you may get the invite from IRCC.

The Parents and Grandparents program is the popular immigration program of Canada, which allows the Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents (outside Canada) to come to Canada on Permanent Residence (PR) visa.

Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) Invitations

The IRCC invited the Interest to Sponsor forms in October/November last year, and subsequently, it has eliminated all duplicate submissions to randomly choose potential sponsors (through a lottery) and issue them invitations to apply. This process ensures an impartial, transparent, and equivalent opportunity to all candidates.

The IRCC will accept a maximum of 10,000 PGP applications for processing for the 2020 program. However, the number of interested sponsors always exceeds the number of applications, it can accept.

How to proceed once you get the Invitation for PGP

The candidates, who get the ITA, need to submit a complete application (to sponsor their parents/grandparents) to IRCC within 60 days. The closing date to apply will be clearly mentioned on the invitation itself.

Relaxations Given the Global Pandemic

The IRCC is providing the following relaxations in the PGP application, considering the impact of Covid-19 pandemic:

  • The IRCC may provide a 90-day extension, in case of delay in submitting documentation, due to service interruptions caused by COVID-19. However, to get such an extension an applicant will have to submit satisfactory evidence.
  • IRCC has announced a temporary public policy that lowers the income requirement for the 2020 tax year to the minimum required income, instead of the minimum necessary income plus 30%.
IRCC to accept 30,000 PGP applications for Program The year 2021

The IRCC will accept a maximum of 30,000 new Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) applications for the 2021 program, as part of the interest to sponsor forms intake process.

The details and timelines of the 2021 PGP (Parents and Grandparents Program) will be confirmed soon by IRCC.
