The University of Manchester has announced 5 British Council scholarships for Indian female students and other South Asian countries.
The university is offering five fully-funded scholarships for Indian and other South Asian women in STEM, i.e., science, technology, engineering and maths, to pursue a master's degree.
These scholarships aim to provide better opportunities for females studying STEM. The entire tuition fees and most of the study overseas related expenses will be covered, including flight tickets, visas, a monthly stipend, etc., and a provision to accompany their children.
These new scholarships will further support women in making transformational changes to their lives and help them make a global mark to inspire future generations.
The university of Manchester has also highlighted it as part of partnership among India's Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the British Council on the Gender Advancement via Transforming Institutions, or GATI, which is a project aimed at advancing female students in STEM in India.
Regarding this announcement, Dr David Polya, who is a Faculty of Science and Engineering Associate Dean for Internationalisation and Professor of Environmental Geochemistry stated, "With the new scholarship offering we hope we can help to further address the gender imbalance seen within STEM subjects alongside giving a passport to a successful career and a lifetime of achievement."
He also stated, "As the world's top university in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2021 impact rankings for action on sustainable development goals (SDGs), The University of Manchester is one of the world's leading research institutes. This scholarship is symbolic of our core social responsibility goals."
