Key Australia Immigration Changes Applicable from 1 July 2023

Australian government is constantly making immigration easy for the applicants for last few months. The new immigration measures taking effect on July 1, 2023 makes it evident more than ever. The government has confirmed most of these measures during the recent federal budget announcement.

Immigration Changes applicable from 1 July 2023

The new program year of Australia starts on 1st July every year. This is why most immigration changes takes place during this time of the year only.  Find below the list of changes the Department of Home Affairs, Australia is employing outlined in the recently announce budget:

  • Increased Immigration target: Australia was accepting 160,000 for last few years, however, for the program year 2023-2024 starting on 1 July, the DHA has increased this target to 190,000. This time around DHA is allotting around 70% of places to skilled migrants in the 2023?24 permanent Migration Program to skilled migrants. 
  • India-Australia Agreement: As per recently signed India-Australia agreement, from 1 July 2023, Indian graduates studying in Australian territory institutions on a student visa can apply to work without visa sponsorship for up to 8 years
  • Post?study work rights: The govt. has announced the allocation of extra 2 years of post?study work rights to Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) holders with select degrees, to enhance the pipeline of skilled labour in key sectors. The extension will be added to the existing additional 1 to 2 years of work rights for eligible foreign students who study, live and work in regional parts of Australia. 
  • Part -time working hour limit: The govt. also announced an increase to the part -time working hour limit for the foreign students in Australia, from 40 hours per fortnight to 48 hours per fortnight, from 1 July 2023. 
  • Visa application charges: With effect from 1 July 2023, Australia will increase the visa application charges between six per cent and 40 per cent across key visa categories. 
  • TSMI income threshold: The govt. increasing the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMI) from $53, 900 to $70,000 to make certain skilled migration settings are better targeted.

With increased skilled migration places and easing immigration measures, it is the ideal time to apply for visa in Australia for the skilled professionals and international students.
