Job vacancies in Canada increased to record high in first quarter of 2019

As per the latest update from Canadian Federation of Independent Business, job vacancies in private sector of Canada have rocketed to a new high, i.e. 435,000 in the first quarter of 2019. Quebec leads the tally of provinces with highest job vacancy rate, followed by British Columbia (BC) and Ontario. A report from Canadian Federation of Independent Business claims a total 4, 35000 vacancies in the first three months of this year, i.e. 3.3% job vacancy rate. Indicating the massive upsurge in the vacancies, Ted Mallet, vice-president and chief economist of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), said, "The national vacancy rate has been steadily climbing for the past two years and it reached another record high last quarter,"As per CFIB shortage of the employees impacted the skilled job positions more compared to the semi or unskilled jobs.

Also, the shortage is indirectly proportional to the wage level across various provinces as the employers are expected to raise the wages even with a single vacant position. Quebec recorded the highest job vacancy rate in first three months of 2019, with the job vacancy rate reaching 4.1 per cent. British Columbia is at the second position with job vacancy rate of 3.6 percent followed by Ontario 3.3 per cent rate.

Industry wise Shortage

The construction industry of Canada experienced largest shortage with a vacancy rate of 4.9 per cent in the first three months of 2019. Personal services is experiencing a shortage with 4.7 per cent rate. Also, Businesses in agriculture too facing shortage with vacancy rate of of 3.8 per cent followed by hospitality sector with a rate of 3.7 per cent.
