Dependent Child age limit increased to under 22 for Canada Immigration

Posted - 26, Oct 2017

The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has increased the dependent child age limit in the Canadian Immigration application. Earlier, the children under age 19 considered as dependent in Canada immigration applications. However, IRCC has now increased this existing age limit. The new age limit for the dependent children is Under 22.

New Dependent children age limit is under 22

With effect from October 24, 2017, children under 22 years of age will now be considered as dependent in the Canadian immigration application submitted through various Canadian Immigration programs managed and directed by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Prior to this, the maximum age limit for dependent child was under 19 years. It remained under 19 for about 3 years.

Exception to the rule

This is an interesting aspect of dependent age rule. The children, who are 22 years of age or above, can still be considered as dependent, if they depend on their parents in view of their mental or physical health condition.

The new age limit rule won’t be applicable to the applications received on or after August 1, 2014 and prior to October 24, 2017. As per IRCC, any change in the in process applications would mean a pause on several PR applications and consequently, it would also affect the processing times via various immigration programs.

Government Expects positive outcome

Canadian government is expecting the positive outcome of the decision of extending the age limit for dependent child in terms of positive social and cultural impact, as it will allow the immigrant families to come and be together.

The decision will also magnetize the skilled workers towards Canada, especially the ones, who prefer keeping their family intact upon immigration to a new country.

Speaking about the decision, Canadian Immigration Minister Mr. Ahmed Hussen said, “Raising the age of dependents lets more families stay together. This will bring economic and social gains to our country as it enhances our attractiveness as a destination of choice for immigrants and refugees”,
