Canadian Immigration Process- Facts you want to know about Biometrics Requirement

Canada immigration process comprise various steps and requirements, and providing of Biometrics is one such requirements that every Canadian visa aspirant must know about. You can only give your biometrics as part of an application you submit to the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Find out all key aspects related to this requirement from Canadian immigration department.

Who needs to give their biometrics (fingerprints and photo)

Usually, you require providing the biometrics if you apply for

  • a visitor visa
  • a work or study permit (excluding US nationals)
  • permanent residence
  • refugee or asylum status
  • an extension of your stay in Canada, known as a visitor record (as of December 3, 2019)
  • a work or study permit extension (as of December 3, 2019)

When to give your biometrics?

You can only give your fingerprints and photo as part of an application you submit to the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

For Example: When an applicant is applying for a visitor visa, study, or work permit, s/he will need to give biometrics before the IRCC begin to process the application.

How often you need to give your fingerprints and photo

Visitor visa, study and work permit applicants

  • You only need to give your fingerprints and photo once every 10 years. You don’t require providing your biometrics again until the 10-year period expires.
  • If you gave biometrics given in the past, while applying for a visitor visa, work or study permit and they are still valid, you do not require giving them again

PR (Permanent residence) applicants

In wake of the Global pandemic, as a temporary measure, in case you provided your biometrics for another application within the last 10 years, you do not need to give the same again.

In case you have never given biometrics in the past, or it has been longer than 10 years, you require giving them when the biometric collection sites nearby you begin offering biometric collection services again. Keep a track of the same.
