Canada Immigration Updates: Immigration rose 71.8 per cent in the 1st and 2nd Quarter

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) revealed that for the first five months of 2022, Canada's immigration figures rose to 71.8 per cent.

By the end of May 2022, Canada had invited 187,490 newcomers as permanent residents, which is 78,370 more compared to the first five months of 2021.

Canada's immigration rate is on a spree and is expected to issue even much-higher ITAs than its 2022-2024 Immigration Levels Plan, i.e., 431,645 newcomers in 2022, another 447,055 in 2023, and 451,000 in 2024.

Provincial Nominee Programs welcomed 15.9 % of total newcomers

Canadian PNPs invited 15.9% of newcomers as permanent residents in the first five months of 2022, i.e., approximately 29,000 newcomers under territorial and provincial nominee programs.

While with the latest Express Entry draw held on July 6, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued a total of 12,288 invitations so far in the first five months of 2022 in overall 14 Express Entry draws.

Employers seek even higher immigration levels to fulfil labour shortages

As per a survey, Canada's major employers are demanding to increase the immigration levels even more, while the other half want Ottawa to maintain at least the current high levels of immigration.

The key reason behind employers' demand is Canada's record low unemployment rate leading to labour shortages, which in turn holding back Canada's economic recovery.

The survey figures revealed that 80 per cent of Canadian employers are facing difficulty in finding skilled workers, especially in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec. As a result, they are struggling to fill vacant positions in fields like engineering, computer science, information technology, construction workers, electricians, plumbers, and other skilled professions and trades.
