Canada has announced the expansion of Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP)

The Immigration Minister of Canada, Sean Fraser has announced the expansion of the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) on 26 August 2022. With this expansion, the government is increasing the benefits of immigration in the 11 participating communities.

This further strengthens the government’s commitment to support the communities; growing immigration to create jobs, tackling the labour shortage issues, and helping businesses grow.

Number of Improvements announced in RNIP

The government will apply a number of new improvements this fall and will support community partners, employers and candidates through,

  • Expanding the geographic boundaries of the participating communities, so more employers are able to participate. These communities are:
  • North Bay (Ontario),
  • Sudbury (Ontario),
  • Timmins (Ontario
  • Thunder Bay (Ontario),
  • Moose Jaw (Saskatchewan),
  • West Kootenay (British Columbia) and
  • Vernon (British Columbia)
  • making it easier to fill labour market requirements in the health care and trades sectors, by expanding the range of employment offers available to candidates, with specific work experience
  • allowing communities to participate for a longer period, until August 2024, (i.e. when the pilot comes to an end)
  • helping community partners provide greater support to candidates and employers
  • decreasing the amount of settlement funds participants need to have
  • strengthening program integrity

Regional immigration programs, like the RNIP, are progressively significant to the sustainable growth of Canada and build on the success of the new permanent Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP), launched in March 2022.

The AIP continues to help the Atlantic Provinces magnetize the skilled newcomers they require to tackle the labour shortage and demographic challenges in the region. To date, 167 confirmed PR program applications have been received since the launch.

Sharing his views about the RNP expansion, Minister Fraser said, “Rural and northern communities face unique economic and demographic challenges, and the expansion of RNIP announced today makes it that much easier for communities to fill their critical labour market needs. They also expand community boundaries so that employers in remote areas can access the program, helping to support economic development and growth in smaller communities across the country.”
