Canada Eases access to CERB for International students and temporary foreign workers

visas default image Canada has eased the access to CERMB (Canada Emergency Response Benefit) to the temporary residents in the country, i.e. the International students and temporary foreign workers.

Canadian government is waiving some of the conditions, i.e. the need for the temporary residents to give the evidence of valid work permit or renewal of the existing one to get the CERB.

What is Canada Emergency Response Benefit?

The CERB is given to those individuals, who could not work now due to COVID-19, such as:
  • Lost your job;
  • I quarantine or sick due to COVID-19;
  • Looking after others because they are in quarantine or sick due to COVID-19; and/or
  • Looking after the children or other dependents as their care facility is closed due to COVID-19.

Eligibility criteria for receiving CERB

It can be given to the people:
  • Living in Canada, who are at least 15 years old;
  • Not working because of reasons related to COVID-19 or
  • Are eligible for Employment Insurance regular or sickness benefits or have exhausted their Employment Insurance regular or fishing benefits (between December 29, 2019, and October 3, 2020)
  • Who had a job and/or self-employment income of minimum $5,000 in 2019 or the 12 months before the date of their application; and,
  • Who has not left their job willingly?
The new steps are taken regarding the access to CERB, which are applicable from this week. These changes are announced in the form of a directive sent to ESDC (Employment and Social Development) Canada officials. They are assessing and approving CERB applications.
