British Columbia to Ease Licensing & Registration Process for Internationally Educated Nurses

Recently, the British Columbia government announced a series of measures to ease the licensing and registration process for internationally educated nurses. Under this initiative, the province will invest $12 million to help them become registered and licensed faster and better address the nurse shortage in the province.

Currently, the registration and licensing process for nurses in B.C. is quite costly and lengthy. It involves various assessments and applications that cost around CAD 4,000. In addition, if a nurse wants to be assessed for multiple streams, like a licensed-practical nurse, health-care assistant, or registered nurse, the overall cost will continue to grow.

Therefore, B.C. will take the following measures to ease the process for Internationally Educated Nurses:

  • Offer $9 million in bursaries for approximately 1,5000 internationally educated nurses. It'll help them pay for the various expenses associated with the licensing process.
  • Consolidate the assessment process to assess Internationally Educated Nurses for various streams at once.
  • Invest in creating new nurse navigator positions to navigate the complicated licensing and assessment process easily.
  • Provide support via job placement and relocation information to nurses through Nurse Navigator

The province started holding exclusively targeted draws to invite qualified healthcare workers with a low score requirement compared to general BCPNP draws. To qualify, healthcare candidates must meet the eligibility criteria of any BCPNP’s Skills Immigration stream.
