Australia to Include India in its Working Holiday Visa Program

Australian government is mulls to expand its Working Holiday Maker Visa program to include more than 10 countries in the list. India is also features in the list of countries to be included soon. Idea is to hire the new workers in the regional parts of the country to meet the labour shortage issues, especially on farms. The Immigration Minister of Australia, Mr. David Coleman announced this expansion on 31st July 2019.

Expansion of Working Holiday Visa program- India features in list of new countries

The current Working Holiday visa program allows the backpackers from the participant countries to work in Australia, while being on a holiday. However, a decline was noticed in the program, which resulted in the shortage of workers in the regional areas of Oz. The government of Australia is planning to extent the program to include backpackers from 13 more countries, in order to meet the demands of the regional businesses of Australia for the workers, require to work on farms.

It's basically the 'Working Holiday Maker Program' is a cultural exchange program that comprise' Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417)and the 'Work and Holiday visa (Subclass 462).' This program enables young backpackers (travellers) to have along holiday in Australia and get an income via short-term employment.

What is the difference between subclass 417 and subclass 462 Visa?

Here is the difference between the two popular working holiday visas meant for the backpackers:
  • Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417) - The advanced countries feature in the list of uncapped 417 visa scheme, i.e. UK, Canada, Germany and Sweden. It doesn't require English proficiency from the applicant.
  • Work and Holiday visa (Subclass 462)- The work and holiday visa scheme includes mostly the developing nations, i.e. developing countries, such as, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam, Indonesia, China and Bangladesh. It required basic/functional level of English language proficiency from the applicant.

  • have a passport from an eligible or participant country
  • be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive)
  • apply from outside Australia
  • Meet the functional English proficiency requirement
  • Meet the educational requirement
  • Meet the health and character requirements
  • Be alone, i.e. not accompanied by dependent children
  • Not have previously entered Australia on a subclass 462 or 417 visa.

Speaking about the expansion of Working Holiday Program, Coleman said,"Work and holiday applicants must meet minimum requirements before a visa can be granted, including having a functional level of English and they must hold or be studying towards tertiary qualifications,''.

Last year, Scot Morrison- the Prime Minister of Australia mentioned that his government had not ruled out an agricultural visa in order to lure more backpackers to work on farms.
