Are you ready to apply for Canadian visa in Parent & Grandparent program opening on 3rd January, 2017?

Posted - 09, Dec 2016

The largely popular and applied Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) of Canada immigration is opening on 3rd January, 2017. The PGP will accept 10,000 fresh applications this time around. The program opens to invite the visa applications from the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, who want to reunite with their families in Canada.

Why you must prepare in advance to apply in PGP opening January 3rd?

Looking at the popularity of this program, the number of applications is expected to exceed the given quota of 10,000 applications. Hence, the applicants who are prepared well in advanced to apply will have greater chance of becoming successful. On the other end, if you are not ready till the very last moment, it’s unlikely to book your place in the list of accepted candidates.

How PGP works?

The Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) allow the Canadian citizens as well as permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents to move to Canada as the permanent residents. The PGP is based on first come, first served basis and hence, the response for this program every year exceeds the pre-decided quota.

PNP Applications Intake was doubled by the government in view of growing demand

Under the previous conservative government the Parent and Grandparent Program application intake was 5000, which was planned to double in the year 2017, however, looking at the huge number of applications received (approx. 14000), within four days of opening the program, earlier this year,  the government decided to double the intake to 10,000 effective January, 2016 only.

And hence, the IRCC retained the first 10,000 complete applications for the further processing under January, 2016 PNP intake. So, it clearly suggests that the demand of Canadian Parent and Grandparent Program visas is immense and it always exceeds the set quota of applications.

Eligibility Requirements for PGP

The parents and grandparents applying under the PGP Program get the permanent residency in Canada and subsequently, the citizenship after due course of time. The sponsor of the PGP visa, require meeting certain income requirements.

Here are key requirements the sponsor of PGP need to meet:
  • Sponsor needs to be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Must be18 years of age or above
  • Need to fulfill the minimum income requirement for PGP. Require submitting notices of assessment issued by CRA (Canadian Revenue Agency) in support of the sponsorship.
  • Need to show that you met the minimum necessary income level for 3 successive years. The income of spouse or common-law partner can be included.
  • The sponsored relative and the sponsor of PGP both need to sign a sponsorship agreement that obligates the sponsor to provide financial support for the sponsored parent or grandparent for up to 20 years.
