Alberta PNP Revises Fee and makes key changes in the key AAIP programs

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) has announced a series of notable changes, effective April 1, 2025, that will significantly impact prospective immigrants. These changes encompass substantial increases in application fees for various streams, as well as adjustments to key program policies.

Revised Fee Structure

A key component of the AAIP updates involves a revised fee structure. Notably, the application fees for the program's worker streams have seen a considerable increase. Specifically, the following streams are now subject to a $1,500 application fee, up from the previous $840:

  • The Alberta Opportunity Stream
  • The Alberta Express Entry Stream (and its associated pathways)
  • The Rural Renewal Stream
  • The Tourism and Hospitality Stream

This adjustment is intended to reflect the evolving costs associated with processing applications and ensuring the program's sustainability.

Furthermore, the Farm Stream, designed for experienced farmers seeking to establish or purchase farms in Alberta, has experienced a more substantial fee increase. The application fee for this stream has risen from $500 to $3,500. Additionally, the fee for requesting the reissuance of an expired nomination certificate has been adjusted from $100 to $150. It is crucial to emphasize that these revised fees apply exclusively to applications and requests submitted on or after April 1, 2025.

Policy Modifications

In addition to the fee adjustments, the AAIP has implemented several policy changes that will affect candidates:

  • Work Permit Facilitation:
    • Alberta has opted out of the federal government's temporary public policy aimed at facilitating open work permits for prospective PNP candidates in 2025. This decision signifies Alberta's intent to maintain control over its nomination process and align it with the province's specific economic priorities.
  • Family Connection and Occupation in Demand Pathway:
    • Alberta has discontinued invitations through the Family Connection and Occupation in Demand Pathway. However, applicants can still accrue points for demonstrating valid family connections within Alberta, such as having parents, siblings, or children who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
  • Language Proficiency Testing:
    • To broaden the range of acceptable language proficiency tests, the AAIP now recognizes the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core, effective for applications received on or after April 1, 2025. This addition provides applicants with increased flexibility in fulfilling language requirements, joining the already accepted IELTS, CELPIP, TEF, and TCF tests.
  • Reduction of Provincial Allocations:
    • The federal government has reduced Alberta's 2025 nomination allocation by 50%. This reduction means that Alberta will be able to nominate significantly fewer foreign nationals for permanent residence. This change has reduced the AAIP nomination allocation from 9,750 in 2024, to 4,875 in 2025.

These comprehensive changes to the AAIP underscore Alberta's ongoing efforts to refine its immigration program and ensure that it effectively meets the province's evolving economic and demographic needs.
