Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP) – 2018

NWTs are the most populated territory in northern part of Canada with diamond producing being its largest industry. With the beautiful capital city, i.e. Yellowknife, it’s one of the best places to settle in Canada.

The Northwest Territories are the northern part of Canada and the most populated in the region as well with the estimated population of around 43,000.  Yellowknife is the capital of Northwest Territories. It is surrounded by Yukon in the west and Nunavut in the east and Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia in the south. The Northwest Territories are known for producing diamonds. Its economy relies heavily on the geological or natural resources, i.e. Diamond, gold, oil, petroleum, natural gas, etc.

The Provincial nominee program of the Northwest Territories is Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP), which is responsible for selecting the quality immigrants for permanent residency in NWTs. The candidate with right skills and experience are being chosen for the program for provincial nominee certificate under NTNP program, which in turn makes them eligible to apply for permanent residency in Canada to live and work in the NWTs.

There are four main streams of NTNP:

  • Northwest Territories Express Entry stream
  • Skilled Worker
  • Critical Impact Worker
  • Entrepreneur
  • Self-Employed Business

You can apply in any of the streams above to get permanent residency in Northwest Territories of Canada. Find below the details of all the key programs.

Northwest Territories Express Entry stream

This category is for the candidates who are registered and accepted in the Express Entry pool of candidates. Your profile can be picked from EE Pool by the NWTs for nomination under skilled worker category.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply under express entry stream of NWTs, you must meet the below requirements:

  • Need to have the required certification or authorization for the particular trade or occupation;
  • Fulfill territorial certification, licensing or registration needs for the job (if required)
  • Need to have the work experience needed to perform the job
  • Give proof of enough settlement funds
  • Show ability to speak in either English or French
  • Proof of settlement funds
  • Should not be a refugee claimant.

Skilled Worker

This category is for the candidates, who have got an offer of job in a skilled position from an employer in Northwest Territories.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply under this category the applicant need to fulfill the below eligibility requirements:

  • Need to have the required certification or authorization for the particular trade or occupation;
  • Fulfill territorial certification, licensing or registration needs for the job
  • Must have the work experience needed to perform the job
  • Give proof of enough settlement funds
  • Proof of settlement funds
  • Should not be a refugee claimant.

Critical Impact Worker

This category is designed for the applicants who have got a job offer in a semi-skilled or unskilled position from an employer in Northwest Territories. The candidate applying under this category must have worked in the position in the NWTs for at least 6 months.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply under this category the applicant need to fulfill the below eligibility requirements:

  • Need to have a temporary work permit and have worked in the given position for at least 6 months;
  • Give proof of enough settlement funds
  • Must have the work experience needed to perform the job
  • Should be able to manage basic communications in either English or French, based on the official language in practice at the work place
  • Arrange language testing by an agency recognized by IRCC.
  • Should not be a refugee claimant.

Entrepreneur

This particular category is for those entrepreneurs or owner-operators of a business entity, who are looking to setup a business in the Northwest Territories. The businesses of all domains can apply for this category, however, businesses, which will launch any new product or a product of considerable advantage to the Northwest Territories would be given preference.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply under this category the applicant need to fulfill the below eligibility requirements:

  • Need to Invest:
    • A minimum of $300,000 for beginning or purchasing a business in the capital city, i.e. Yellowknife
    • A minimum of $150,000 for beginning or purchasing a business outside Yellowknife.
  • Need to have a personal net worth of:
    • Minimum $500,000 if commencing or purchasing a business in Yellowknife
    • Minimum $250,000 if commencing or purchasing a business outside of the capital of Yellowknife.
  • Need to have an extra $75,000 kept in a trust account (to be released upon completion of a Performance Agreement as per the business proposal)

Self-Employed

This particular category is for the self-employed professionals, who plan to setup business outlets or professional practices to offer services, which are highly in demand in the NWTs.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply under this category the applicant need to fulfill the below eligibility requirements:

  • Require practicing a profession in a field, which is considered to be having a skills shortage
  • Fulfill certification or accreditation needed (if applicable)
  • Need to fulfill all NWT or Canadian requirements for regulated occupations.
  • Show basic communication skills for the province
  • Show a knowledge and understanding of the Northwest Territories and its economy/industries
  • Show access to enough financial resources to start and run the practice, and support themselves and the accompanying dependents, for a period of 6 months
  • Provide a complete business plan.
