The Skilled Migration Visa is one of the most popular pathways to Australia PR. For the 2026 immigration year, the General Skilled Migration (GSM) Program has updated visa application fees, which apply to skilled workers applying under the points-based system. Applicants under the GSM program are assessed based on age, education, English language ability, skilled work experience, and other profile factors. Based on the points scored, eligible candidates may receive an invitation to apply.
The General Skilled Migration (GSM) Program includes the following three points-tested visa subclasses:
Skilled Independent Visa – Subclass 189
This is an independent permanent skilled visa for Australia. No sponsorship or state nomination is required to apply for this visa.
Skilled Nominated Visa – Subclass 190
This is a state-nominated permanent visa. Applicants must obtain nomination from an Australian state or territory government before applying.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa – Subclass 491
This is a regional skilled visa that allows you to live and work in designated regional areas of Australia for up to five years. It offers a pathway to permanent residence after meeting eligibility conditions.
