Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) – new immigration opportunity

The new AIPP may attract specific set of applicants in view of its exceptional eligibility criteria. For instance, the program may not require experience for the international students as well as graduates. Moreover, AIPP also accepts the immigrants with limited language skills and intermediate level of education (for NOC ‘C’ Occupations).

However, it’s not that the AIPP is available for applicant with limited skills only, the management, technical, professional workers, and individuals in skilled trades occupations, such as, NOC 0, A or B, can also apply in the program.

Atlantic Provinces included in the AIPP

The Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) includes the Maritimes provinces, i.e. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island along with the New Newfoundland and Labrador.

These provinces and territories collectively called the Atlantic Provinces. A total of 2,000 immigrants may immigrate through the AIPP as per 2017 Immigration Plan of Canada. The Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) will start accepting applications for permanent residency w.e.f. March, 2017.

How AIPP Introduced?

The government of Atlantic Provinces wants the immigrants in order to combat the demographic challenges as well as the labour market requirements in the region. Though, the program was officially announced in July, 2016, however, it was being discussed since long. Last year, John McCallum (then Immigration Minister) had a meeting with provincial governments and emphasized on the need of immigrants for the Atlantic region. Thereafter, the program was officially announced.

The program at now is introduced for 3 years and will work to plug the resource gaps that various industries and businesses in the region are facing.

Key Streams of the program

The program can be broadly divided into three major streams or categories.
  • Atlantic High-Skilled Program (AHSP)
  • Atlantic Intermediate-Skilled Program (AISP)
  • Atlantic International Graduate Program (AIGP)

As the titles for the program suggest former two programs are for the skilled workers, while the last one is for the intentional graduates. Though, a few things are yet to be cleared, i.e. how the allocation of immigrants will be done among the provinces, and what share each category of the program will have.
