Newfoundland & Labrador is Launching New Immigration program for skilled workers on 2nd January

The key Atlantic province of Canada, i.e. Newfoundland and Labrador is launching a new immigration program, which will target the skilled workers. The Priority Skills Newfoundland and Labrador will start accepting the new applications, with effect from January 2, 2021.

 

This is a new immigration pathway for highly qualified, highly skilled newcomers with specific experience in fields, i.e. technology and ocean sciences, where demand has outdone local training and recruitment.

The PSNL has been introduced keeping in mind the requests from the local employers for extra assistance to fulfil a growing demand for highly educated and highly skilled workers.

The new program will be open to newcomers, who completed a Masters or Doctorate degree at Memorial University within the past 3 years, and to others who are outstandingly qualified and have experience in working in a specialized, highly-skilled, high-demand occupation for minimum 1 year. The list of in-demand occupations will be revised regularly to address labour priorities in the best way.

Despite the disruption caused by the global pandemic, the Provincial Government remained active in terms of making a plan for future growth. The province focused on meeting the 2022 target of growing immigration to 2,500 new permanent residents yearly, subject to the recognised global pandemic special measures orders and guidelines.

Eligibility Requirements for Priority Skills Newfoundland and Labrador

Priority Skills Newfoundland and Labrador will be open to the individuals who have 1 or more of the below advanced academic or specialized education in priority sectors, i.e. information and communications technology, ocean technology, health care, agriculture and aquaculture:

  • Memorial University Masters or PhD degree graduates, whose studies finished within the past 3 years; or
  • Outstandingly qualified personas, who have experience working in a specialized, highly-skilled, high-demand occupation for a minimum of 1 year in the last 10 years.

For the candidates with work experience, attention will be given for in-demand occupations, i.e.

Engineers and Developers:

  • Software Developer
  • Biomedical Engineer
  • UI/UX Developer
  • Electrical Engineer
  • AI Developer
  • Mechanical Engineer
  • Python Developer
  • .NET Developer
  • Infrastructure Engineer

Technical Specialists:

  • Security Specialist
  • Cloud Specialist
  • Bioinformatician
  • Computer Network Support

To become eligible to apply for Priority Skills Newfoundland and Labrador, candidates, must have taken an IELTS or CELPIP language test within the last year and scored equivalent to CLB level 5 or higher. Moreover, all applicants need to be a minimum of 21 years old at the time of application
