Latest Update- Working on Campus with Canadian Study permit

The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has released and update regarding the policy, procedures and guidance concerning On-campus employment for international students in Canada holding Canadian Study Permit. On-campus work identified as the one that occurs at employment facilities within the boundaries of the campus. Find out more about this latest update.

On-campus employment on Canadian Study Permit

A student in Canada only allowed working on the campus of an educational institution at which s/he is registered in full-time studies. On campus, the students may work as teaching or research assistants located at:

  • A library,
  • Hospital, or
  • Research facility

All the above needs to be affiliated with the institution, but situated outside the physical boundaries of the institution’s campus. A student has a permission of such work, if is exactingly related to the student’s research grant. The employer can be any of the following:

  • the institution
  • a faculty
  • a student organization
  • the students themselves (self-employment taking place on campus)
  • a private business
  • a private contractor providing services to the institution on the campus

Latest Update Regarding on-campus work

As per latest update, the full-time post-secondary students may work without a work permit on the campus of the university / college at which they are a full-time student. The department will make this authorization visible on their study permit and will be valid for the period equal to their study permit validity at the institution and period of full-time studies. This ruling applies to students who are:

  • involved in full-time studies at
    • a public post-secondary institution, such as
      • a college
      • a trade or technical school
      • a university
      • a CEGEP (in Quebec)
    • a private post-secondary institute that functions under the same rules and regulations as public institutions in Quebec
    • a private or public secondary or post-secondary institute in Quebec providing qualifying programs of 900 hours or longer leading to
      • a diploma of vocational studies (DVS)
      • an attestation of vocational specialization (AVS)
    • a Canadian private institution sanctioned by provincial statute to confer degrees, i.e. an associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree, but only if the student is registered in a program of study leading to a degree, as approved by the province, which may not comprise all programs of study offered by the private institution
  • working
    • at any number of jobs on campus, or
    • As a research or teaching assistant at facilities off campus in research related to their research grant. These facilities can be teaching hospitals, clinics and research institutes that have a formal association or link with the learning institution.

Note: International Students need a social insurance number (SIN) to work in Canada. To apply for a SIN (for on-campus employment), a student must have a valid study permit. S/he can apply for a SIN before or within the first 3 days of employment.
