Latest Canada Travel update- Canada will only permit fully vaccinated travellers from 15 January

As per the latest update announced by government of Canada, with effect from 15 January 2022, Canadian government will only permit the fully vaccinated travellers to enter Canada. The government periodically adjust border measures assessing the ongoing global pandemic caused situation.

From 15th of this month, the government is only providing the limited travel restriction exemptions to some unvaccinated traveller and rest all need to be fully vaccinated to enter Canada.

Canada to allow fully vaccinated travellers only

As of September 7, 2021, foreign nationals could not travel for a non- essential purpose unless they are fully vaccinated. However, starting January 15, 2022, all foreign citizens (essential or non-essential travellers) must be fully vaccinated to enter Canada, unless otherwise exempt. Foreign nationals, not fully vaccinated will continue to be required to meet an exemption.

Noteworthy exemptions

Important exemptions comprise unvaccinated new permanent residents, refugees, temporary foreign workers in agriculture or food-processing occupations, asylum claimants, and some minors under the age of 18. Overseas nationals, exempt from the travel restrictions must continue to meet all travel document requirements under the IRPA and the IRPR.

Who is a fully vaccinated traveller?

  • To qualify as a fully vaccinated traveller to Canada, you need to have received at least 2 doses of a vaccine accepted for travel, a mix of 2 accepted vaccines or at least 1 dose of the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
  • You must have received your second dose at least 15 calendar days before you enter Canada. For example, if your second dose was anytime on Thursday July 1, then Friday July 16 would be the first day that you meet the 15 day condition.
  • In addition, you must not have signs or symptoms of COVID-19 and follow all follow pre-entry testing and entry requirements

Vaccines accepted by the Government of Canada for the purpose of travel to and within Canada:

  • AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD (ChAdOx1-S, Vaxzevria, AZD1222)
  • Bharat Biotech (Covaxin, BBV152 A, B, C)
  • Janssen/Johnson & Johnson
  • Moderna (mRNA-1273)
  • Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty, tozinameran, BNT162b2)
  • Sinopharm BIBP (BBIBP-CorV)
  • Sinovac (CoronaVac, PiCoVacc)
