Key Immigration Announcements in Canada Budget 2022

  • Canada’s Ambitious Immigration Plan

Canada has set an ambitious annual target of accepting 451,000 new permanent residents by 2024—the most of whom will be skilled workers, which will help to combat persistent labour shortages.

To help the processing and settlement of such significant number of newcomers to Canada along with government’s increased commitment to Afghan refugees—the federal government has committed $2.1 billion over 5 years and $317.6 million current in new funding.

  • Proficiently Welcoming Visitors, Students, and Workers to Canada

As the things getting back to normal across the world and pandemic and travel restrictions are removed, Canada expect to see a huge number of temporary residence applications, visitor visas, and study permits.

Hence, the Budget 2022 recommends allocating $385.7 million over 5 years, and $86.5 million current, for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency, and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service to enable the timely and well-organized entry of a rising number of visitors, workers, and students.

  • Enhancing the Citizenship Program

To improve and modernize the process of gaining citizenship in Canada, the government lately launched new online services, which comprise the ability to submit applications electronically.

To further enhance the experience of candidates and to facilitate the Citizenship Program to accommodate higher levels of applications, the government wish to announce legislative alterations to the Citizenship Act to allow automated and machine-assisted processing and the safe and secure collection and use of biometric information.

The 2021 Economic and Fiscal Update has also given funding in 2022-23 for citizenship processing, as part of an $85 million investment to lessen processing times and pandemic caused application backlogs.

  • Safeguarding the Integrity of Canada’s Asylum System

Budget 2022 recommends IRCC, the Canada Border Services Agency, the Immigration and Refugee Board, and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service with $1.3 billion over the next 5 years, and $331.2 million current, to support the long-term stability and integrity of Canada’s asylum system.

Federal government also offering to announce amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to allow IRCC to need the electronic submission of asylum claims. At now, claims can be submitted either digitally or on paper, making it challenging to keep track of all information related to a file and eventually leading to processing delays. This reform will help modernize and streamline the asylum process and lessen wait times for claimants.

Improving Support Services for Immigrants and Visitors to Canada

The latest budget also suggests to provide $187.3 million over 5 years, and $37.2 million ongoing, for IRCC to enhance its ability to respond to a increasing volume of enquiries and to invest in the technology and tools needed to better support people using their services.
