Category-Based Selection in Express Entry draws

Category-based selection is a focused approach within the Express Entry system. Instead of general draws, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) targets candidates who meet specific criteria defined by the Minister. These categories are designed to address identified economic needs. IRCC invites candidates to apply for permanent residence if they demonstrate strengths in areas such as:

  • Proficiency in a specific official language (English or French)
  • Work experience in a designated occupation
  • Educational background

Current Express Entry Categories

The currently active categories for Express Entry draw include:

  • French-language proficiency
  • Healthcare and social services occupations
  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations
  • Trade occupations
  • Agriculture and agri-food occupations
  • Education occupations

Category-based draws are intended to work alongside regular Express Entry draws to help Canada meet specific economic goals.

New Education Occupations Category in Express Entry

On February 27, 2025, IRCC introduced a new category specifically for education occupations under the Express Entry system. The department has identified this as a priority category for issuing Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence in 2025.

Which Occupations are Included in the Education Category?

Occupations in Canada are classified using the National Occupation Classification (NOC) system, which categorizes jobs by industry and sector. A key part of the NOC is the Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities (TEER) ranking. This system assigns a TEER level (from 0 to 5) based on the typical training, education, and experience needed for a job. TEER 0 requires the most, while TEER 5 requires the least. The following occupations are part of the new education category:
