In a significant milestone, India has emerged as the first country to receive over $100 billion in remittances during 2022, marking a historic achievement in global migration trends.
According to the World Migration Report 2024 by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), India witnessed a remarkable surge in remittances, reaching a staggering $111 billion in 2022. This surpasses all previous records and solidifies India's position as a global leader in remittance receipts.
The report underscores Southern Asia's dominance in attracting high remittance inflows, driven by a significant migrant worker population. India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh emerge as key players in this economic landscape, benefiting from substantial contributions from their diaspora communities abroad.

Remittances, defined as financial or in-kind transfers sent by migrants to their families or communities back home, serve as vital lifelines for millions of households in developing economies. Despite challenges in accurately measuring these flows, they remain a crucial source of foreign income for many nations.
While migrant workers from Southern Asia contribute significantly to global remittances, they also face numerous challenges, including financial exploitation, high migration costs, xenophobia, and workplace abuses. The Gulf States continue to be crucial destinations for these workers, particularly in sectors like construction, hospitality, and domestic work.
India's prominence in global migration is two-fold: as the largest recipient of remittances and as a significant source of international migrants. With sizable diasporas residing in various countries, India's influence on global migration patterns remains substantial.
The report highlights shifting dynamics in global migration, such as Mexico's rise as the second-largest recipient of remittances and China's declining inflows due to demographic changes and restrictive policies. Additionally, Asia emerges as a major source of internationally mobile students, with China leading outbound student mobility to key destinations like the United States, the UK, and Australia.
