Pause on Express Entry- FSW category is temporary – Sean Fraser, Immigration Minister, Canada

In a recent interview with Prime Asia TV Canada, Canadian immigration minister has answered many questions related to popular express entry system as well as about the policies of IRCC (Immigration Refugees, and Citizenship Canada).

Immigration Minster clarified stand on Express Entry invitations

Answering a question Canadian Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser clarified IRCC’s stand on Express Entry invitations in future and backlog of PR (Permanent Residence) applications.

The minister said, “Its worth reflecting the challenge how it came through to be. This is a temporary problem in my view. It comes directly from Covid-19 pandemic. As you can appreciate that last year we resettled a record number of permanent residents in Canada, exceeding the target of 401,000. However, in order to do that we had to take a new approach to resettle many people, who were already in Canada, because we were dealing with a time when the borders were closed to many people, who were like to come here. So, we had two years when these applications were in the inventory. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t continue to accept the new applications.

The minister emphasized that immigrants are key to the maple leaf country, as Canada’s history is defined by the immigration. He also recalled how his family came to Canada, several generations ago from Scotland.

He further added, “Canada’s economy depends on continuing to grow the number of newcomers to come to Canada. As such of those who thinking of coming to Canada and like to make a contribution, I record you to consider applying to come to Canada as a newcomer, under one of the many immigration programs we have available.

Stand on Express Entry FSW category

Speaking about the Pause on Express Entry- FSW (Federal Skilled Worker) category, the minister said, “I covered to certain degree the challenges around the FSW portion of the Express Entry. Make no mistake that Provincial Nominee Programs continue through the system.

He later explained, “With respect to the federal skilled worker program and applicants who might be waiting for the future draws. The Pause is a temporary thing and it is something that we are working through right now. Because we do have a significant inventories, again which was driven by the unique circumstances around the pandemic. We do intend to return to a position where federal worker stream will continue to welcome the new people to Canada.

The minister shed light on various other aspects and streams of Canada immigration in this recent interview. In nutshell, he emphasized on below points.

  • Canada will continue to welcome newcomers through its various immigration programs to meet the skill shortage in the country
  • The IRCC is committed to clear application backlogs as the government has already allocated extra funds to clear the same at earliest.
  • The pause on FSW category draws is temporary and the IRCC is constantly making efforts to resume inviting candidates under this stream.
  • The processing time is not likely to increase for every general EE application, as the cases or scenario regarding the increase are already known
  • The IRCC continues to explore different options to benefit international students in Canada, including the introduction of new permanent residency streams for the foreign students.
  • Canada will continue to explore pathways to welcome newcomers through temporary and permanent programs
  • For parents and grandparents program, the immigration department is exploring the option and discussing things to make the process smooth
