Changes to Off-Campus Work Hours for International Students in Canada

Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller has confirmed that temporary measures allowing international students to work more than 20 hours per week off-campus will not be extended. Starting this fall, international students in Canada will be permitted to work up to 24 hours per week during the academic year.

Changes announced in Off-Campus Work Hours after various considerations

The decision comes after careful consideration of the impact on students' academic performance, with Minister Miller highlighting concerns about excessive work hours affecting study outcomes. Additionally, limiting off-campus work hours aims to discourage international students from applying for study permits solely for employment purposes. The increase from 20 to 24 hours per week aligns with the increased cost of living requirement for international students introduced last December.

Improving the integrity of the international student program

Moreover, IRCC is implementing additional measures to improve the integrity of the international student program, including the requirement for a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) and the Trusted Institutions Framework for designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada.

To work off-campus during the academic year, international students must meet specific criteria, including holding a valid study permit, studying full-time at a DLI, and maintaining satisfactory academic standing.

While changes are underway, international students can still work unlimited hours during academic breaks, provided they plan to return to full-time studies in the upcoming semester.
