Canadian Immigration Minister Joined Task Force to give update on application backlog & System

The immigration minister of Canada, Sean Fraser joined a task force (created in June 2022) on August 29, 2022 to discuss and provide the update on application backlog and improvement of the immigration system. Prime Minster Justin Trudeau announced the creation of this ministerial task force on June 25, 2022, to help enhance government services, with an emphasis on decreasing delays around passport processing, immigration services, and at airports.

Key proceedings and updates announced

The Immigration Minister Fraser underlined how Canada is working to support reinforce its immigration system and lessen application backlogs, with a emphasis on addressing labour shortages, enhancing client experience and reunifying families. Here are the key points highlighted:

  • Recruiting up to 1,250 new employees by the end of the fall to upsurge processing capacity and handle the backlogs in the short term;
  • Reforming and streamlining operations to make Canada’s system more viable in the long term;
  • Accepting over 300,000 new PR (Permanent Residents) admissions this year by August 22, attaining the milestone earlier than in any previous year;
  • Issuing over 349,000 new work permits from January 1 to July 31, 2022 compared to around 112,000 issued during the same period last year
  • Completing almost 360,000 study permits between January 1 and July 31, 2022, compared to nearly 306,000 finalized in the same period last year
  • Approving over 216,000 applications for the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel from March 17 to August 24, 2022 for Ukrainians and family members considering to find safety in the maple leaf country
  • Launching application status trackers for citizenship and some PR applicants to have well-timed information on their files, which will be expanded to more applicants in the coming year; and
  • Publishing monthly data on IRCC official website to keep Canadians up to date on the progress of immigration department.

Canadian government is surely making efforts to enhance the delivery of services that Canadians depend on every day. The task force will continue take actions to device short-and-and longer-term solutions that will decrease wait times, clear inventories and enhance the overall quality of service to Canadians. Speaking about the steps being taken by the government, Minister Fraser said,

Families, communities, and businesses deserve an immigration system that works for everyone. Through targeted investments, hiring 1250 employees to address the backlog, and the improvement of our online systems and processes, we will deliver on our promise to Canadians. We will reduce wait times and work hard to attract and retain skilled workers, as we continue to help communities across the country access the talent they need.
