Canada’s Unemployment rate falls to record low with a significant rise in Employment

As per the Labour Force Survey (LFS) - March 2022, the unemployment rate in Canada dropped to record low, i.e. 5.3% since the availability of relevant data in 1976. In March 2022, the maple leaf country saw the drop of 0.2 percent in the in the unemployment rate. The credit of this major fall goes to the significant rise of 73,000 (+0.4%) in the Employment in Canada. It is good news not only for the local Canadians, but also for the new immigrants landing in Canada.

Significant Employment Rise in Canada

The considerable Employment gains in Canada are largely due to the women aged 55 and older and men aged 25 to 54. Employment improved in both goods- and services-producing sectors. Increases were concentrated majorly in the province of Ontario and Quebec. Here are two key statics to look at:

  • Total hours worked rose 1.3% in March.
  • Average hourly wages rose 3.4% on a year-over-year basis.

March LFS data shows labour market situations during the week of March 13 to 19. Since the February reference week, Canadian provinces continued to ease public health restrictions. Total employment rose by 73,000, motivated by a rise of 93,000 (+0.6%) in full-time work.
