Canada is removing all COVID-19 Restrictions from October 1, 2022

Although, Canada has been the most lenient country in terms of allowing new immigrants even during the pandemic, however, the government did take a layered approach to border management and Canada immigration in order to protect the health and safety of Canadians.

However, now, the Government of Canada has announced the removal of all COVID-19 entry restrictions, along with the requirements of testing, quarantine, and isolation for anyone entering Canada, effective October 1, 2022. This good news for the aspirants of Canada PR visa as well as the immigration aspirants and travellers under all categories.

No Covid-19 related protocol for travellers arriving in Canada

As the global pandemic caused situation continues to evolve, changes to existing border measures has become essential in the presence data and reports, indicating normalcy, both in Canada and around the world.

There are number of factors, which facilitated the government to take this decision of removing restrictions, i.e.

  • modelling that indicates that Canada has largely passed the peak of the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 fuelled wave,
  • Canada’s high vaccination rates,
  • lower hospitalization and death rates, and
  • the availability and use of vaccine boosters (including new bivalent formulation), rapid tests, and treatments for COVID-19.

What is not required from 1 October 2022?

With effect from 1 October 2022, all travellers, regardless of citizenship, will no longer have to:

  • submit public health information through the ArriveCAN app or website;
  • provide proof of vaccination;
  • undergo pre- or on-arrival testing;
  • carry out COVID-19-related quarantine or isolation;
  • Monitor and report if they develop signs or symptoms of COVID-19 upon arriving to Canada.

Moreover, Transport Canada is also eliminating existing travel requirements. Hence, from October 1, 2022, travellers will no longer need to:

  • undergo health checks for travel on air and rail; or
  • Wear masks on planes and trains.
  • Cruise restrictions are also being lifted, and travellers will no longer be required to have pre-board tests, be vaccinated, or use ArriveCAN. A set of guidelines will remain to protect passengers and crew, which will align with the approach used in the USA.

Few gentle reminders

Although, the Canadian government is lifting all Covid-19 measures, however, it is expected that the travellers take some basic precautions assessing the situation on their own, i.e.

  • Although requirement mask is being lifted, all travellers are strongly suggested to wear high quality and well-fitted masks during their journeys.
  • People are reminded that they should not travel if they have symptoms of COVID-19.
  • If travellers become sick while travelling, and continue to be sick upon arriving in Canada, they should inform a flight attendant, cruise staff, or a border services officer upon arrival.
  • Such travellers will be referred to a quarantine officer, who will decide whether the traveller requires further medical assessment as COVID-19 remains one of many communicable diseases listed in the Quarantine Act
