Australia Registers Record-High Net Overseas Migration in 2022-23!

Australia continues to be the prime choice for overseas immigration aspirants. In the fiscal year 2022-23, Australia observed a notable surge in net overseas migration, with 518,000 individuals being added to the total population of Land Down Under, as per recent data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Jenny Dobak, the Head of Migration Statistics at ABS, highlighted that while the overseas migration figure reached a historic high, it yet to reach the pre-pandemic patterns.

During 2020 and 2021, the pandemic and associated border closures hindered potential migrants from coming to Australia. Remarkably, temporary visa holders experienced substantial drops in arrivals during this period. In the financial year 2022-23, there was an uptick in the number of migrants arriving on temporary visas, albeit with a slight reduction in departures.

Record upsurge in Net overseas migration

Comparatively, migrant arrivals witnessed a 73% upsurge from the previous year, reaching 737,000 individuals, while migrant departures dropped by 2%, marking the lowest level since 2006-07, with 219,000 departures. It is worth noting that estimates from September quarter 2022 onwards are considered initial.

Of the 737,000 migrants who arrived in Australia, three-quarters entered on temporary visas, totalling 554,000 individuals. Among temporary visa holders, international students included the largest group, numbering 283,000. The data also highlights that the number of migrant departures decreased to 219,000 individuals in 2022-23, down from 223,000 the previous year. This decline is attributed to the impact of travel restrictions during the pandemic, resulting in a cohort of temporary migrants presently residing in Australia, with no immediate obligation to depart.

Jenny Dobak indicated that the pre-pandemic cycle of continuous arrivals and departures of temporary migrants has not fully resumed, contributing to the heightened net overseas migration in 2022-23. However, she acknowledged the likelihood of a future impact as individuals arriving on temporary visas, predominantly international students, may depart upon completing their studies.

India is top contributing nation

The top five contributing countries to net overseas migration in 2022-23 were India, China, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Additionally, the median age for migrant arrivals was 27, contrasting with 33 for migrant departures in the same period.

Positive Signs for Australia immigration aspirants in 2024

The record-high net overseas migration in Australia for 2022-23 signals a promising outlook for immigration aspirants in 2023-24 and 2024-25. With 518,000 individuals added to the population, an upsurge in migrant arrivals, particularly on temporary visas, bodes well for those seeking new opportunities Down Under. The upward trend reflects a rebound from pandemic-related disruptions, offering hopeful prospects for future immigration endeavours.
