Australia has announced key Changes to benefit International Students

The government of Australia has announced a few key changes to Student and Graduate visa measures. The government has introduced these changes to address some essential concerns of the International students, and Universities in view of the interruption caused by the covid-19. Government Recognizes the Significance of International Students in Australia

 

Announcing these changes the immigration minister of Australia, Alan Tudge, said, that the changes will offer "assurance" to foreign students already in the country and to those, who couldn't travel because of COVID-19 border closures.

 

As per him, these key measures support the international education sector, i.e. the 4th largest export sector and the government will help it in recovering. The international student visa holders contribute $40 billion every year and support 250,000 jobs as well.

 

5 Key visa Changes for International Students

 

Find below the changes announced by the government to limit the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on international students -a cohort of visa holders that contribute $40 billion annually and support 250,000 jobs:

  • Government to restart allowing student visas to new students offshore: It implies that on reopening of borders, students will already have visas and hence, they will be in a position to organize travel.
  • Free-of-charge visa application: Foreign students can lodge a further study visa application without any costs, in case they are not able to acomplish their studies within their pre-specified visa validity in view of pandemic situation.
  • Online study entitled to be counted towards prerequisite for post-study work visa: The present study visa holders studying online (outside Australia) in view of Coronavirus pandemic, will be able to count that study towards the study requirement of Australia for a post-study work visa.
  • Post-study work rights: The international graduates, who held a student visa, can apply for a post-study work visa from outside Australia in case they are not able to return in view of the pandemic.
  • Extra time for providing English language test results: Extra time will be allocated for candidates to give English language results where Coronavirus pandemic has interrupted access to these services.

Note: The changes listed above require new legislation, which is likely to be released by Australia's immigration department. Hence, the details on eligibility parameters and requirements have not been revealed yet.
