ACS Adds 10 Cyber Security Occupations- A Significant Boost for Tech Professionals

The Australian Computer Society (ACS) has announced a major expansion of its scope of assessment, adding 10 new cyber security occupations to its list. This move is in direct response to the Australian Government's Skills in Demand visa and Core Skills Occupations List (CSOL), which highlights the growing demand for cyber security professionals in the country.

New Occupations Added to ACS Assessment

The 10 new occupations added to ACS's scope of assessment are:

1. Data Analyst
2. Data Scientist
3. Cyber Security Engineer
4. DevOps Engineer
5. Penetration Tester
6. Cyber Governance Risk and Compliance Specialist
7. Cyber Security Advice and Assessment Specialist
8. Cyber Security Analyst
9. Cyber Security Architect
10. Cyber Security Operations Coordinator

This expansion marks the most significant increase in ACS's assessment scope in over a decade, reflecting the evolving technological landscape and the critical role of cyber security in today's digital age.

Preparing for the Future

While the new visa regulations took effect in December 2024, ACS is currently working on system and process updates to accommodate the expanded scope. The new assessment processes are expected to be fully operational by January 15, 2025.

Key Points for Applicants

• Existing Pathways: Applicants can continue to use existing pathways like Post-Australian Studies (PAS), General Skills, and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for assessment across all ANZSCO codes.
• Optional Vendor Certifications: ACS will accept optional vendor certifications in specialized fields like cyber security and DevOps to support an applicant's domain knowledge and industry currency.
• Processing Delays: Due to the system and process changes, applicants may experience processing delays of up to four weeks in the new year.

ACS will be hosting its monthly "Find Your Path to Migration" webinar on February 5th, 2025, to provide further guidance and answer questions.
