? The Canadian government is likely to raise cap on the number of applications for Temporary workers & international graduates for the new PR (Permanent Residency) pathway. The immigration minister has recently indicated the same in his recent quote. However, as per minister, the department will first vigilantly assess the early results of the program, to make any decision regarding the same.

Last month, Canadian Immigration Minister Marco E. L. Mendicino, announced an innovative pathway to permanent residence for over 90,000 essential workers and international graduates of a Canadian institution. All these are actively contributing to the economy of maple leaf country.

New PR pathway for Temporary workers & international graduates

Canada's new immigration and PR policy will grant permanent status to temporary workers and international graduates of a Canadian institution, who are already in Canada, possess the skills, and experience, which the country needs to fight the pandemic and fast track the economic recovery.

Eligible candidates can submit their applications through online portal with effect from May 6, 2021, at 12:00 p.m. EDT time. To be able to apply:

  • The workers need to have minimum 1 year of Canadian work experience in a health care profession or another pre-approved essential occupation.
  • International graduates need to have completed an eligible post-secondary program in Canada within the last 4 years, and no earlier than January 2017.

The online portal will remain open until November 5, 2021, or until Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reaches the maximum number of applications. Find below the details as to how many applications the IRCC is going to accept for each category:

  • 20,000 applications for temporary workers in health care
  • 30,000 applications for temporary workers in other selected essential occupations-
(Nearly 10,000 application received for both above categories)
  • 40,000 applications for international students who graduated from an eligible Canadian institution- (International student category capped within 24 hours)

v The IRCC has also launched three extra streams with similar eligibility requirements for French-speaking and bilingual candidates;however, there is no maximum number of applications.

  • Workers in Canada - Stream A for French-speaking health care workers- (No cap)
  • Workers in Canada - Stream B for French-speaking essential non-health care workers (No cap)
  • French-speaking international graduates- (No cap)
This new PR pathway identifies Canada's requirement for educated and experienced workers as the government is working hard towards the economic recovery.
