Parents & Grandparents Program (PGP) of Canada is open- Interest to Sponsor Form is available online

The popular Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) of Canada is open from January 2, 2018. PGP allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents to come to Canada and get PR. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) opens the Parents and Grandparents Program in the month of January every year. In 2018, IRCC plans to receive 10,000 new applications for PGP.

Online Interest to Sponsor Form is now live

The Interest to Sponsor form is now available online from January 2. The people interested in sponsoring their parents and grandparents to Canada, need to fill this form. This form will be available until February 1, 2018. Interest to Sponsor form is not the direct application for the PGP, rather it is the primary step to apply for sponsorship via Parents and Grandparents Program.

The IRCC randomly chooses the sponsors based on the online form submitted by the applicants. Subsequently, IRCC invites the selected applicants to submit complete sponsorship application for sponsoring their parents and grandparents to come to Canada as permanent residents. However, the sponsor showing interest in sponsorship via PGP must be 18 years or above.

Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) Criteria

Apart from meeting the other eligibility criteria, the sponsorship applicant under PGP must ensure that he/she meet the income requirements. The prescribed Interest to Sponsor form ask the interested sponsor to affirm and announce that he/she has the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) to support the person he/she is looking to sponsor to come to Canada as permanent resident. The sponsors under PGP need to provide an evident that they fulfil the minimum income requires for each of the last three taxation years.

All the applicants who are submitting the online Interest to Sponsor form will get a notification whether they have been invited for Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) or not. The applicants who receive the Invitation from IRCC, need to submit complete application attaching all the documents within 90 days.

Other Eligibility requirements

An applicants of PGP must:
  • Be minimum 18 years or above
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
  • Be Meeting the specified income requirements
  • Willing to support that person and their dependants financially
  • Submitting notices of assessment issued by the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) in support of their sponsorship.
  • Interested sponsorship applicant must also show they have met the minimum necessary income level for 3 consecutive years. The income of spouse or partner can be included
  • Both, i.e. the sponsor and the sponsored relative must sign a sponsorship agreement that commits the sponsor to provide financial support for the sponsored person for up to 20 years.
